5 Ideas to Decorate Your Fence for the Holidays

5 Ideas to Decorate Your Fence for the Holidays

It’s that time of year once more: the time of year when the weather begins to grow chilly, the smell of fresh baking fills the air, and we all begin to break out the holiday decorations. If you’re a homeowner, you likely already have plans to decorate your house and possibly even your yard for this holiday season. Whether you’ve never before considered decorating your fence, or you’re looking for some new Pinterest-esque ideas, there are a multitude of ways to make your fence just as festive as the rest of your house with some easy, low-cost décor.

Keep it Simple with a Garland

Garlands are my personal go-to for any sort of holiday décor. String almost anything together, and you’ve got a garland–meaning you can even make these yourself with items found around your home or in nature. Add Christmas lights to the garland to make it even more festive, and you have yourself a beautiful, jaw-dropping decor in relatively no time. Garlands can be made from leaves, flowers (real or fake), twine, pinecones, pine boughs, tinsel, ribbon, and nearly anything else you can come up with.

Hang Wreaths

Wreaths add a touch of welcome festivity to any type of household, and the best part about them is how versatile they are. They can be made from a variety of materials, from tree branches, to paper, to metal wire, and can be decorated in as many ways and colors as the imagination can conceive of. Wreaths are most often hung on doors, but you can spruce up your property this holiday season by adding some to your fence. Hang several around the perimeter, or simply place one on the front gate. Whatever you choose to do, wreaths communicate a sense of hominess and an offering of friendship to anyone who happens to approach your home.

Turn Posts into Snowmen

Turning one’s fence posts into snowmen is a simple, quick, and inexpensive way of festively decorating for the holidays that doesn’t need to be permanent. Of course, if you possess a brown or black fence, this might require the extra mile with a layer of paint, and may not be practical; but if you naturally already possess a white or picket fence, this may just be the perfect option for you, and leave your neighbors marveling at your creativity and ingenuity. Simply stick some pieces of coal onto your fence post in the shape of a smile, and don the pole with a hat and scarf, and you have yourself a little snowman.

Add Color with Lights

Of course, any yard Christmas décor is incomplete without glittering Christmas lights–and fences are no exception. Christmas lights come in a multitude of sizes and colors, and simply stringing some along the length of your fence is often enough to change the entire atmosphere of your yard. At the end of the day, this option is often the easiest and requires the least amount of effort, yet it can make a big difference. Better yet, pair this up with one of the other ideas on this list for an even greater effect.

Light Up the Night with Luminaries

Luminaries are a beautiful form of lantern that can be store-bought or homemade, but have an effect on the viewer that is unlike any other sort of holiday décor. Luminaries provide a soft sort of light, conveying to its audience a sense of a warm, friendly, and welcoming home. Even something as simple as stuffing a mason jar with Christmas lights can have a mesmerizing effect, and hanging some of these along your fence can go a long way at setting the holiday mood.
