The Different Kinds of Home Fences Explained

The Different Kinds of Home Fences Explained

The right fence can add a lot of value to your home, improve your outdoor living space, and help protect your family members (furry ones included). At least half of all homes in the US have fences around their yards for various reasons. Still, choosing the right fence for your needs can be challenging.

Luckily, we can help with that. Here’s a fencing guide to help you choose the right home fences for your needs and budget!

Wooden Fence

Wood is the classic, tried-and-true option for a home fence. It’s fairly strong, it can be quite tall, and they offer a lot more privacy than many other kinds of fences.

The only downside with wooden fences is that they require more maintenance than others, especially if you want to paint them. Expect to have to repaint your fence every few years, and occasionally need home fence repairs or replacing panels over time. You may even need a new fence within 20 years or so, and even shorter with intense storms.

Vinyl Fence

Vinyl fences are great options for both aesthetics and durability. Vinyl is quite strong, making it perfect for weathering harsh storms or other potential damage.

Also, you can get vinyl fences in almost any style. They can offer the same privacy as a tall, wooden fence, or you can choose a more aesthetic picket fence. There are plenty of options.

The only downside to vinyl is that it can reflect sunlight quite strongly, especially with white vinyl. If that isn’t a problem for you, that vibrancy can help your house “pop”, which can increase curb appeal and, consequently, your home’s value by up to 7%.

Composite Fences

Function meets aesthetics. Composite fences serve to add plenty of privacy and a strong barrier around your yard. However, composite fences are one of the most expensive options on the market.

Still, composite fences are stylish, long-lasting, and functional. It’s a great option if your budget allows for it.

Chain-Link Fence

Metal chain-link fences are great options for containment. They aren’t exactly meant for aesthetics, but they are perfect for strength, longevity, and keeping children or pets in the yard (or predators out).

Chain-link fences also require minimal upkeep. They’re incredibly sturdy and the posts and beams should last a lifetime. At most, you may need to replace the chain links, but that should take at least a few decades!

The major downside with chain-link fences is that they are see-through, so they don’t offer much privacy. However, if you want to keep the natural light in your yard but still have a barrier, it’s a great and affordable option to choose.
