Still trying to choose a property fence? The gateway to your property says a lot about you: it shows off your style to friends and neighbors, and warns would-be intruders to stay out. If you’re looking for a sturdy, low maintenance option that will likely never go out of style, aluminum might just be your best bet. Though an aluminum fence doesn’t require much care, there are a few things you can do to make sure it stays standing for years to come. Whether you’re considering putting one up, or learning how to care for the one you have, here are a few tips to keep it looking good.
Over time, your fence will likely accumulate some dirt and dinge. The first step in its care is to get it clean! Luckily, nothing fancy is needed for the task: a hose, a bucket of soapy water, and a scrub brush will do just fine. If needed, you can also use a degreaser for grease spots. If your area gets lots of rain and your fence is showing hard water stains, you can remove those with CLR.
When cleaning your fence, avoid using harsh substances or industrial cleaners-- these can cause discoloration. Also avoid using abrasives like steel wool.
The great thing about an aluminum fence is that it shouldn’t easily scratch or chip-- its powder coat finish makes sure of that. But if it does, don’t worry! Touching it up is as easy as painting any other fence. Choose an exterior touch up paint made specifically for aluminum fences and you’re ready to go!
Once your fence has been cleaned and/or touched up, you’ll want to preserve your hard work for as long as possible. One way to do this is to wax it. Waxing your aluminum fence is a lot like waxing a car and even uses the same products. First, make sure your fence is completely dry. Then, apply a coat of car wax and leave it for half an hour. Finally, gently wipe away the excess wax with a soft, damp cloth. Each spring, be sure to oil the hinges, tighten the screws, and adjust the fence’s gate if needed to keep it level.Once you’ve put the work in, make sure your fence stays looking good-- watch for things that can warp or damage it. Remove any tree roots or large shrubs growing under or too near to your fence. If you have or live near children, don’t let them climb or swing the fence, and keep the gate secured so it doesn’t swing in the wind.
